Computing the Complexity for Schelling Segregation Models

چکیده
The Schelling segregation models are “agent based” population models, where individual members of the population (agents) interact directly with other agents and move in space and time. In this note we study one-dimensional Schelling population models as finite dynamical systems. We define a natural notion of entropy which measures the complexity of the family of these dynamical systems. The entropy counts the asymptotic growth rate of the number of limit states. We find formulas and deduce precise asymptotics for the number of limit states, which enable us to explicitly compute the entropy. ∗Supported by the SFB-grant F1305 and the grant P16613-N12 of the Austrian FWF. †This work was partially supported by NSF grants DMS-0355180 and INT-0104675 ‡Supported by the SFB-grant F1301 of the Austrian FWF.

Clustering and Mixing Times for Segregation Models on Z
The Schelling segregation model attempts to explain possible causes of racial segregation in cities. Schelling considered residents of two types, where everyone prefers that the majority of his or her neighbors are of the same type. He showed through simulations that even mild preferences of this type can lead to segregation if residents move whenever they are not happy with their local environ...

We introduce non-type based, social interaction preferences into a Schelling model of residential choice. These social interactions take the form of a Prisoner’s Dilemma played with neighbors in the Schelling model. We begin by studying two models independently. We study the Schelling model over a wide range of utility functions and then proceed to study a spatial Prisoner’s Dilemma model. Thes...

متن کاملSegregation That No One Seeks
This paper examines a series of Schelling-like models of residential segregation, in which agents prefer to be in the minority. We demonstrate that as long as agents care about the characteristics of their wider community, they tend to end up in a segregated state. We then investigate the process that causes this, and conclude that the result hinges on the similarity of informational states amo...
